Our Favorite Holiday Traditions

By Brett Gottlieb

Trick-or-treating is over and Thanksgiving is around the corner. You know what that means; the holiday season is upon us! Last year the coronavirus pandemic forced many of us apart for the holidays. So this year we are more than ready for some quality time with loved ones, making memories and participating in favorite traditions.

Our team here at Comprehensive Advisor has many cherished memories related to traditions, some of which are just too tasty or fun not to share! By giving you a glimpse into our holidays, we hope to spark a desire to implement new traditions into yours, keep going with those you already have, or simply take you down memory lane as we head into the 2021 holiday season.

The Annual Turkey Day Dessert Contest

My family usually stays close to home for the holidays, making an effort to avoid crowds and travel. While we enjoy laying low, that doesn’t mean our celebration isn’t big. For example, our Annual Turkey Day Dessert contest is a fierce competition not for the faint of heart. (The competition couldn’t happen in 2020 due to COVID, so this year’s is sure to be one for the books.)

For the contest, each year we introduce a new theme, and 5 key categories are used to judge each brave participant’s sweet masterpiece. Each entry must align with the theme and has to be made from scratch (no pre-made pie crusts or store-bought frosting welcome here). Then, if that wasn’t enough, each submission must include a brief presentation about the dessert, creative expression allowed. We’ve seen everything from songs, interpretive dances, haikus, passionate speeches, and pantomimes! Judges cast votes based on presentation, appearance, originality, complexity, and, of course, flavor. Family and friends of all ages participate, but the criteria are stringent and no one has won two years in a row.

As you can see, we don’t mess around. This tradition assures that dessert is always the best course of the meal and adds the elements of anticipation and laughter that never disappoint. And just to prove how seriously the Gottliebs take our competition, here are some photos from past events (and one of me in a turkey costume—you’re welcome):

Tastes of the Holidays

On a more tame note, we all have those tastes and smells that can transport us back to a certain time or place. For Serena Akinaga, our team’s Operations and Marketing Manager, it’s the taste of her mother’s Sweet Potato Pineapple Bake.

While sweet potato dishes are common in a Thanksgiving spread, her recipe is the perfect mix of sweet potatoes, pineapple, marshmallows, and sweet and crunchy brown sugar and pecans. Give this dish a try, it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser: Sweet Potato Pineapple Bake.

Traditions at Comprehensive Advisor

Whether it’s entertaining events or classic sights, sounds, and tastes of the holiday, traditions are often what give real meaning to the season for so many.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of work and wondering if you’re doing enough. For this holiday season, it’s our hope that you take time to be present and enjoy the traditions you and your loved ones have created.

Just like our holiday traditions, we take pride in creating meaningful relationships that last for generations. Whether you implement some of our favorite traditions or you want to talk about how you can help secure your future to make memories for years to come, we’d love to hear from you.
